The Mission And Ministry

Markham Woods Presbyterian Church

Our Defining Vision:

“Growing The Faith Of The Whole Family Of God

Inwardly Strong, Outwardly Focused”

Foundational Question - Who are we at our core?

Mission aim #1:  Reach and grow with the Good News of Jesus Christ

Scriptural Foundation & Direction:

“I sought only one thing while I was among you, to know Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.”

Scripture tells us, we are people of the way…the way of the cross of Jesus Christ.  The way of cross as a visual image means we are people of the tree -- the trunk represents the core of our faith -   faith in the power and the love of the cross of Jesus Christ the foundation living structure on which we stand.

Foundational Question - Where do we place our faith?

The core of our faith “our trunk” is the cross of Jesus Christ.  Jesus and Him crucified is the foundation living structure on which we stand.  We have FAITH that God has come to His creation in the person of Jesus Christ.  The Good News is that God is for us, seeks us, wins us through Christ’s sacrificial and atoning death and the risen Lord lives with us through the power of the Holy Spirit.  Our faith is alive and active in Christ Jesus.

Ministry objectives:

We reach the whole family of God by: Witness, Prayer, Care, Word, With-me

Ministry Motto:

We seek to Grow Faith in Jesus Christ

Foundational Question - Who does our mission aim to reach?

Mission aim #2 Reach and grow all people

Scriptural Foundation & Direction:

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me; Go therefore and make disciples…” (Matthew 28:18-19)

The church exists to reach the world for Christ “to make the way known.”  We are called to grow, to reach, teach and preach, to care and minister to all of God’s family.  Jesus came to preach Good News, lifting of burdens, release to the captives.  We reach to all whom God places in our path or while walking on God’s path for us.  This means young, old, rich, poor, church and most importantly un-churched. (I Corinthians 2:1-5)

Ministry objectives:

We “add daily to the numbers of the people of the way (Acts 3:47) by: Witness, Prayer, Care, Word, With-me, Send

Ministry Motto:

We reach out to the Whole Family of God

Foundational Question - What does God want for us internally?

Mission Aim #3 Grow deep in order to send

Scriptural Foundation & Direction:

 Fullness of Life in Christ

6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives* in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. Colossians 2:6-

God’s desire and will for us is to grow inwardly strong with deep roots of faith.  God calls us to a Sanctifying process.  His Spirit speaks and teaches our spirit.   We grow inwardly by sinking deeper roots of faith, obedience, discipleship and compassion.  We are like the seed planted in good soil that can stand against the flood and wind.

As Christians, as followers of Jesus Christ, we are called on in part, to continually grow inwardly strong.  God grows us; we exist in his loving will to be his apostles, to reach a broken, lonely and hurting world with the message of Jesus Christ. We wish to honor the commission of Jesus, to be the “vine of Christ” in our community, so grow deeper in him daily.

Ministry objectives:

We grow inwardly strong by: Witness, Prayer, Care, Word, With-me, Send

Ministry Motto:

Growing Christian Disciples Inwardly Strong

Foundational Question What is God’s purpose for us?

Mission aim #4:  Reach grow send

Scriptural Foundation & Direction:

30The surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downwards, and bear fruit upwards…” (2 Kings 19:30)  “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit.” (John 15: 5)

God calls Markham Woods into existence for a purpose.   God wants to grow us inwardly strong in order to prepare us for his will, purpose and mission that is to be the branches that bear good fruit.  God has gifted Markham Woods through the Holy Spirit for a purpose – a ministry that reaches and sends.  Every believer is in ministry on behalf of Jesus Christ. We send people to serve by helping them discover their talents, spiritual gifts and interest for ministry.

We help each person find the place of service that blesses him/her and through him/her blesses others.  Sending is a practice of the vital church.  We send by Prayer of selection, Call them to the task and Equipping them for the task.  Our focus is always outward, reaching, blossoming.   Jesus said I am the vine and you are the branches.  We are like the tree that bears good fruit.  We will be known by the fruit we bear for all to see.

Ministry objectives:

Grow outward Focus Through: Witness, Prayer, Care, Word, With-me, Send

Ministry Motto:

Branches that bear much Fruit
